コスプレ雑誌「COSMODE」米国版　オンラインマガジンで登場

日本の人気コスプレ雑誌「COSMODE」が、オンライン雑誌「COSMODE　ONLINE」として米国で発売される。
　オンライン雑誌といってもいわゆるWeb情報サイトではない。PDF形式になった雑誌を、インターネット上からダウンロードするかたちとなる。紙媒体のフォーマットを持った雑誌を、ネットを通じて購入するとかたちと言えば分かりやすいだろう。雑誌は日本の「COSMODE」の記事と写真の翻訳と現地オリジナルの記事から構成される。

　5月25日に発売された第1号では、およそ70ページにコスプレイヤーの紹介やスナップ写真、コスプレ衣装の作り方、世界コスプレサミットの紹介といった記事が盛り込まれている。価格は4.49ドル（約500円弱）である。
　「COSMODE　ONLINE」の公式サイトで登録したうえで、自分でダウンロードをすると雑誌が手に入る。サイトでは1号のほか、無料のお試し版0号の提供も行っている。

　コスプレはもともと海外のイベントで行われる「マスカレード」と呼ばれるキャラクター仮装の影響を受けることで、国内のアニメやマンガ関連のイベントで自然発生的に始まったものである。しかし、現在は、それが逆輸出のかたちで、海外で行われている。国外で増加している日本のアニメ・マンガイベントで「Cosplay」と表記される人気イベントでもある。
　その範囲は、アジアや北米、ヨーロッパ、ラテンアメリカにも及んでいる。一方で、日本と異なるコンテスト形式のステージショーなど各国で独自の発展を遂げている。若い女性のファンが中心である日本に較べて、欧米では年齢・性別を越えた愛好家が多いのも特徴である。それだけに英語圏のコスプレはファン層も厚く、有望な市場と言える。

　それでも英語圏の地域は世界中に広がっており、米国だけを考えても、雑誌・書籍の流通にコストのかかる書店販売は、隙間市場の雑誌にとってはビジネス上のリスクが大きい。
　今回ユニークな点は、雑誌を丸ごとダウンロードする方法を取ることで、そうした流通コストやさらに印刷コストを省いていることである。雑誌のコストは大幅に下がり、少部数での事業収益化が可能になる。

　さらに日本にも既に存在するネット上のコミュニティサイト「COSMODE.NET」でなく、雑誌そのものを販売するというアイディアも興味深い。英語圏には、アニメ情報やアニメDVD情報、コスプレ情報、コンベンション情報など多数の関連サイトが既に溢れている。
　一方で、アニメ雑誌は2、3誌のみで、特に日本にあるようなコスプレ雑誌やホビー雑誌、DVD雑誌など、さらに細いサブカテゴリー雑誌は存在しない。そうしたところに何らかのニーズがあり、商品の提供方法しだいでビジネスが成り立つ可能性がある。

　「COSMODE　ONLINE」は、日本の雑誌『COSMODE』の協力により、株式会社オーバードライブが運営している。オーバードライブは、アニメフィギュアの企画・発売のほか、海外向けにアニメ関連グッズの販売を行っている。
　同社は既に海外向けのインターネットショップを運営しており、今回の「COSMODE　ONLINE」もそうしたビジネスの一環となる。
